Build Cool Shit with Cool People

Make it your personal mission to build cool shit with cool people.

If you’re thinking about  starting a company don’t make it about it be about money, power, success, or the cool factor? These are the wrong reasons to start a company…and if this is all you got, you better be ready to fail.

Yes, you do need drivers as you do in anything, but don’t let these be the reasons why you start a company.

Starting a company is one of the hardest things you will ever do. It’s tougher than any Iron man, fight, school paper, exam, breakup, or fight you’ve ever been in. Starting a company is like getting in the ring with an MMA fighter just to get your ass beat over and over again – the key, getting right back up because anything worth doing is worth fighting for.

Don’t waste another day doing anything other than this. I’ve started several companies for the right reasons and I’ve started companies for the wrongs reasons. What I’ve learned is this simple statement: build cool shit with cool people.

Don’t make the mistakes I’ve made, get out there, find cool people, and get started building cool shit.

If you do this, it will change your life.

Do work you love

The last few months of working on several startup projects with passionate entrepreneurs has caused me to think about this idea of work. And, how do you find work that you love to do so much that you would do it even if you didn’t get paid? Entrepreneurs, you know exactly what I’m talking about here.

This whole process began when I started working on an old project that I quickly became super passionate about again. I was able to answer the question why am I doing this? The why that sometimes gets clouded with the what and how was clearer than ever before – I love building stuff and things: products, teams, companies, and anything that inspires me to take action.

Are you trying to figure out what kind of work you love to do? Does it feel like a struggle? If so, it should. However, don’t lose hope because what you love to do just might be right around the corner.

Finding work that you love is a struggle for…everyone. I’ve struggled with this, my friends have struggled with this, and pretty much everyone I know struggles with this at some point in their life. In fact, most people fail miserably at this.

Nevertheless, if you at least have a destination in sight, you’re more likely to arrive at a place in which work feels more like something you love than work.

Work has to start with a mindset of knowing that you can love work. If you’re able to do this, you are in the homestretch. And, if you can figure out what work you love, you’re more or less there.

Becoming a better entrepreneur

Entrepreneurs are insane, they take huge risks, put everything on the line – all for the sake of doing what they love – starting and building companies. To be an entrepreneur you have to be confident and know what it takes to make it happen – I love saying that! You can’t let anything stand in your way of getting things done…nothing.

And, these same traits that are necessary to be a great entrepreneur might also be holding you back from becoming even more than you thought you could be.

Let’s take a look at what might be holding you back and see what we can do to push you to be better.

You

You need to wake up each morning and look seriously in the mirror. The one who is going to hold you back is you. The first person you need to learn to lead is yourself. And, if you can’t lead yourself, how do you expect to cast vision and lead a team. You can’t. Look in the mirror every morning and get yourself in check.

A level entrepreneurs attract an A level team

If you think you are the shining star and you don’t need anyone else, then you suck. You deserve to have you ass beat and thrown out into the streets. Great entrepreneurs know that they need to surround themselves with the best and brightest team. The better the team the better the outcome.

Over the years I’ve built both A level teams and B and C level teams. Let’s just say the B and C level teams taught me a very valuable lesson: take the time to hire the best and don’t settle for anything less.

Communicate, communicate, communicate

A mentor use to tell me to always keep a high level of communication. He use to ream my ass everyday about communication to the point I finally learned. He beat it into me and I am so thankful he did.

If you want to piss people off, fail to communicate with them. This is no different at home with your wife or your kids. You need to communicate. Let your people know what’s going on, both good and bad – I’ve learned this lesson too.

Invest in creating a culture that communicates well and rewards for it too.

Built a family not just a team

Stop looking at your team as people who just make you money. Look at your team as if they were family. Care for them, love on them – not physically, and do what you can to always be there for them – that is what family does.

Always be understanding, put yourself in their shoes, and do what you can to help them pursue their goals and dreams. It’s not just a team that you should be building, you should be building a family.

GUIDE TO A GAME CHANGERS LIFE

Do you want to be a game changer? Are you already a game changer? Either way, we need more game changers in the world today. We need people just like you to step outside the tent and do something so big, so impactful that it literally changes the landscape.

There isn’t nearly enough game changers in the world today. Let me rephrase that, there aren’t nearly enough people stepping outside their comfy tent to activate their game changer. Everyone has it inside of them they just need to activate it. I am writing this to help you activate your game changer – that is if you are serious about being a game changer.

No rehashing of old outdated ideas. I am talking to game changers: people who want to come up with something new, something brilliant, something game changing. A game changer doesn’t maintain the status quo, they blow stuff up and get excited about the outcome.

If your sitting at your desk reading this right now thinking, why can I not be a game changer. You can, and I am going to show you how. It’s not nearly as hard as you think. In fact, I’ll let you in on a little secret, it’s simple. All it takes to be a game changer is determination, insanity, and faith that you can do the impossible.

I’ve put together a guide for those of you who want to be a game changer. I only want people who are serious. If you’re not serious, please move along and don’t wast anyone’s time.

Now, if you are serious you can Click here to download the Guide to a Game Changers Life.

After you’ve downloaded the document, read through each question, and fill in your answers in the space provided. Simple. After you’ve filled out the doc, and you 100% believe in what you’ve placed there, it’s time to post it everywhere.

Post it on your bathroom mirror, on your dash board in your car, and anywhere else you look everyday. If you truly want to be a game changer you need to keep your game changing guide in front of you. It is also a god idea to read through your game changers guide each week to make sure that you are on track and holding yourself accountable.

Game changers do the things that others aren’t willing to do. Go and be a game changer.

SCREW THOSE WHO SAY YOU CAN’T

Do you have people in your life that tell you, you can’t? How does this make you feel?

The reason people will tell you that you can’t is because in reality they are the one’s that can’t. Instead of them getting off their ass and going out there and trying something, they would rather sit around and tell you, you can’t. These people suck in my book. You know what I tell these people? Suck it.

Quit listening to the negative Nancies and dream killers and start listening to God and your Gut. You can do anything that you put your mind to and there is nothing, and I mean nothing that you can’t do in this world.

As we come up on 2012, I challenge you to put all naysayers aside, dream big, and go for it. Yes, you are going to fail miserably (I’ve failed so many times I lost count) but that’s just part of the game. You will get back up, brush yourself off and keep going. And in the end, you can look back and be thankful that you stepped out and did something incredible.

SHOW UP AND WORK

From the time I was able to work, my Dad taught me a very valuable lesson, he said, “Son, if you ever want to have anything in your life, you have to show up and work for it”. And I remember those days showing up to pour concrete at 7-am in the morning – that sucked, but we did it and got it done.

Would you agree that every successful person knows that, more than a positive mental attitude, you have to show up and work for it? Zig Ziglar teaches this important tip and he says, “SHOW UP AND WORK!”

Showing up is hard, and sometimes it flat-out sucks (well most of the time), that’s the reason you don’t want to do it, but the truth is, that is why most people never succeed – they don’t want to show up and do the work.

You want a simple tip that can help you get over this whole work thing and help you get more done? This is what I’ve tried to do lately. Segment all your action steps and then do the hardest ones first, you know the ones that you usually avoid. If you can do this, I believe that you, at some point in your life will end up with things that most people will never have.

If it were easy everyone would be doing it. Art is hard. Selling is hard. Writing is hard. Making a difference is hard. Show up and do the hard work that others are unwilling to do.

DISCUSSION QUESTION?

Are you showing up and doing the work?

MEGA VISION

Do you have a mega vision? Or is your vision very micro and nothing of any worth? Might it be time to throw out your ridiculously small-minded vision and come up with a mega vision for yourself, maybe your company, our country, and our world?

Don’t settle for a small vision. Small visions don’t change the world. Small visions don’t get us or you out of challenging times. Small visions are pathetic and pathetic is something we need less of these days.
