TOP 10 POSTS FOR AUGUST 2011

How was your August 2011 and what are you looking forward to for September 2011?

My August was crazy with moving to California, launching FREELUNCHFRIDAY, pitching a few new startups, and trying to continue writing my books; one on social media and the other on business and self help. It was a super busy and overwhelming month at times and I am now thankful to say that we are settled in and it feels like Gods hand is on everything.

PREMATURE SCALING: LEADING CAUSE OF STARTUP FAILURE

I’ve failed at a lot of things in my life including start-ups, and you know what, I’m pretty excited about it. You would think that I would be sitting here crying a river like most people, but I’m not. Instead I’m reading, learning, studying, asking tough questions, reflecting on my screw ups, and working on a bunch of new start-ups with amazing and brilliant people.

Realizing that it is a combination of things that cause a start-up to fail, one question that I’ve asked myself over and over after having a start-up fail pretty bad is, “What makes start-ups succeed or fail?”

SIMPLE THINGS YOU CAN DO EVERYDAY WHEN JUST STARTING OUT

This is a guest post by Tamaryn Tobian, founder of Spectacle Creative Media in Grand Rapids, Michigan. You can follow her tweets on Twitter. If you want to guest post on my blog, please, check out the guidelines here.

In the last nine months or so, I’ve learned more things and experienced more life changes than I had pimples during puberty.  That’s what following your gut and jumping into risk with both feet does. Why so many life changes?  I started my own business – a creative communications company.

In truth, it seemed like a crazy idea. In this economy? Especially when I started to count how many other little creative agencies and studios there are in my city. There’s a lot of them. But, I did it anyway.

23 COMMON ATTRIBUTES THAT ALL SUCCESSFUL ENTREPRENEURS SHARE

Whatever your beliefs, after years of being a business man and surrounding myself with other successful business men and women, I’ve found there to be a number of common attributes that we share. Please take a few minutes to read through and see if you agree.

If you don’t have the skills, don’t worry about it either. Most of the skills, I’ve gotten by screwing up. Yup, screwing up. We all do it and it’s just the way it is. If you think you are any different you are wrong. Sorry.

WHAT IT’S LIKE BEING AN ENTREPRENEUR

Are you an entrepreneur or do you aspire to be an entrepreneur? Do you have that raging itch that keeps you up all night to quit your job and go out on your own? If this is you, I say make the leap and quit that boring job – I bet it is holding you back anyways.

I have no idea where you’re at or what is going on in your head now, but just maybe you are wondering what entrepreneurship is like and what you’re going to need to be able to do to succeed.

WHY I MOVED TO CALIFORNIA

For several weeks now maybe months people have asked, “why California? Why do you want to move there?” These are all great questions and I’m very happy that people have asked them.

I’ve been pretty vague on my answers though. Not because I wanted to be rude (it probably came across that way) but because I didn’t want people trying to sway me from a decision that I felt God leading me. I think often times we make decisions not based on our inner voice from God, but based on the people around us. I wasn’t going to be that guy anymore. When God speaks we need to listen!

20 NEW AND UPDATED THINGS TO LOOK FOR ON MY WEBSITE

Just last week I launched my new website! I am very excited about it and I can’t stop pulling out my phone or my laptop and looking at it. It’s almost like getting a new car, but in my mind better!

With all this excitement, I need to take a moment to thank a lot of people who helped me make it happen. Without each and every one of them I wouldn’t have been able to get it done. Everyone worked hard, shared ideas, gave suggestions, and collaborated to completion.

GO ALL OUT OR DON’T GO AT ALL

If you are going to go, why not go all out? This makes me think of people who say, “I will just run the 5k and that will be good for me. When really in their head they would love to work up to the 25k or the marathon. This is awesome!

Why not go after the marathon? Not that this is going to happen over night either, but you can do it! It can happen! It will take some pretty serious hard work and dedication, but why not? Why not go all out?
