Success: 9 things you can do daily

As a leader you must break down barriers, climb over walls, and press forward….all the time. It’s not easy, and if it were, everyone would be doing it.

If success is something you desire, here are 9 things you can do daily:

1. Put the pedal to the metal

Everyday you wake up, it’s up to you push it as hard as you can. Don’t let up or someone will sneak right by. You have to be aggressive and you can’t play around. People who put the pedal to the metal always cross the finish line first.

2. Be aware of yourself

The first person you need to be in touch with is yourself. If you’re not in touch with yourself, you’re not going to be able to be in touch with anyone else. Take the time to tap into you – It will be the best time you ever spent.

3. Move on

Don’t sit around waiting for opportunities to come to you, go where the opportunities are – they might not be happening where you are, but they are happening. Move to a big city, go where your customers are, move to a place that offers more resources. Don’t sit around waiting for an opportunity to happen. Move on.

4. Channel your Emotion

Control your emotions before they control you. Emotions can ruin you. They will wipe you out every chance they get. Don’t let emotion get in the way of you winning. You need to be emotionally tough. Train your emotions so that when you go out there you are ready.

5. Don’t Be Afraid To Scrap

Don’t let people push you around or take advantage of you. I don’t care how young you are, if you are a female, it doesn’t matter. Be a leader and be respectful, but don’t take shit from anyone. I don’t care if it is a VC, a partner, friend, you need to stand up be a man or woman and lay it on the line. People might think you’re a prick at first, but in the end when everyone succeeds they will respect and appreciate you.

6. Don’t put up with office politics

To build a great culture of people who innovate takes time, energy, and obviously the right people. That is why when office politics pop up you need to take care of them right away. Don’t let them linger or they can wipe out all your hard work. Nip them in the but as soon as they happen and let your team know that you’re not willing to put up with crap like that. Culture is key and anything that stands in its way should be thrown out.

7. Take Care of Your People

People are the key to your company’s success. Without the people your left there standing around like an idiot. That is why you take care of your people. Take an interest in their lives, their families, and their hobbies. Love on them. And make sure that they know that you care. If you can do this, you will always have people willing to work their tails off for you.

8. Say no

A simple word that is hard to say, NO. Many people have a hard time saying it. I do. The sooner you can get good at saying this word, the better off you’re going to be….in every area of your life.

9. Take Risks

Risks are part of life and success. If you’re not willing to take risks, then don’t plan on making it very far. The greatest feats where accomplished by leaders who choose to take the biggest risks.

Winning requires failure

I know that I’ve talked allot about failure lately, but it is just so real and awesome! People who are afraid to fail don’t end up doing much with their lives. God built us to fail. And God built is to fall. We just have to keep getting back up and thriving everyday to win.

If you think failure isn’t part of winning in life then you are more than a failure, you are an idiot.

Wait a minute, who is this guy saying that failure is awesome. How can failure be seen as awesome? If you honestly have to ask that question, you are not fit for what it takes to win. Winning requires failure.

If I offended you, I’m not sorry. You need to keep your job, play it safe, and do what you do best…working for someone else. There is nothing wrong with that. Not everyone is built to push the envelope to the point of literally breaking bones – back in my racing days, if you hadn’t broken a bone you got weird looks like, “You are a racer, no way, shut up!”.

If you’ve decided to keep reading this and you’re not totally pissed off, let’s be honest about something. Failure is brutal and more often than not, it hurts like hell. Some of the worst pain you’ve ever felt. Sometimes it’s even so bad that it takes you to your knees crying and weeping like a little baby – I’ve been there. Not because of physical pain, but more because of mental and emotional pain. It’s cool to man up and cry….I won’t judge you.

In my racing days we used to have a saying, “If you’re not falling down, you’re not going fast”. It’s true. This meant that if you were playing it safe and not pushing the envelope then you probably weren’t winning races. You were losing races. See, the guys and girls who gave it all they had and took changes won the races. And, the races they didn’t win, they went down hard, got back up, and kept riding.

Winning is hard, failing is hard, but it’s just what has to happen if you want to win. You can’t be afraid to push the envelope and get a little nuts. Yeah, you will fail and it will hurt like hell. Just get back up, learn from it, and move on.

In my racing days, I took some bad crashes where I broke bones, messed up organs, and busted up my face. But, it never stopped me from getting right back on the bike and having a good time.

Take some chances, push the envelope, get nuts, and do it now before you end up living some boring ass life.

Have a great week friends!

SCREW THOSE WHO SAY YOU CAN’T

Do you have people in your life that tell you, you can’t? How does this make you feel?

The reason people will tell you that you can’t is because in reality they are the one’s that can’t. Instead of them getting off their ass and going out there and trying something, they would rather sit around and tell you, you can’t. These people suck in my book. You know what I tell these people? Suck it.

Quit listening to the negative Nancies and dream killers and start listening to God and your Gut. You can do anything that you put your mind to and there is nothing, and I mean nothing that you can’t do in this world.

As we come up on 2012, I challenge you to put all naysayers aside, dream big, and go for it. Yes, you are going to fail miserably (I’ve failed so many times I lost count) but that’s just part of the game. You will get back up, brush yourself off and keep going. And in the end, you can look back and be thankful that you stepped out and did something incredible.

TODAY IS NOT THE DAY TO GIVE UP

When you believe in something to the point that you are willing to lose everything and keep going, you are a warrior who has made a decision to persevere believing that all things are possible. Have you made this decision that no matter what the odds, no matter what the challenges – even losing everything, that you will persevere chasing after your goals?

I would say that perseverance is perhaps the most important skill that every human needs to develop as it is essential to reaching any sort of destination whether that be: a personal goal of losing weight, starting a company, raising capital for your company, getting a piece of technology off the ground, a long-term friendship, your relationship with God, and last but not least marriage – this takes serious perseverance.

John Maxwell says a quote that I think is perfect for this, “Success seems to be largely a matter of hanging on after others have let go.” Are you willing to hang on after others have let go? When you start to lose your grip, your hands are almost bleeding, and your at the point of packing up your bags and going home, are you going to deny all of these things and stay the course of action knowing that your destination just might be right up ahead?

Today is not the day to give up….on anything, and I mean anything, today is the day that you put your head down, build a plan, and keep charging forward – this just might be the best decision you ever make that will change your life forever. Now GO.

——-

DISCUSSION QUESTION:

Perseverance is not easy, but it’s worth it. So, are you going to be someone who hangs on, or are you going to be someone who, like most people, lets go?

HOW RESILIENT ARE YOU?

When I was a kid my dad would get these huge rubber bands from work. When I first saw one of these rubber bands I could not believe it. Never had I seen anything like it,  some 3 feet long and 2 inches thick. These things were dangerous. All I could think of was wanting to shoot my sisters with them!

I remember asking my dad, “dad, can I play with them?” He said, “Yes you can, but be careful they recoil fast”. I had no idea what that meant, but I would soon find out.

NOW IS NOT THE TIME TO GIVE UP

Struggling the last 7 years of my life and persevering, has taught me about what it means to be a survivor. Not just any old survivor, but one who lives on to tell his story. My survivor story might not be as awesome as, say Aaron Ralston, but I have a story and I have never given up.

I think we all stories of survival do we not? Think of life. Life is filled with challenges, obstacles, and tragedies. We all face them. When you persevere and make it through, that makes you a survivor.

WHO HAVE YOU GIVEN UP ON?

I found this poem earlier today written by Edgar A. Guest, a prolific English-born American poet who was very popular in the first half of the 20th century. I felt it to fit perfectly with the message I was trying to communicate about never giving up on someone.

I had to make a few changes to the poem in order for it fit, however it was just so beautiful that I had to use it.

PASSION

You will never fulfill your destiny doing something you despise. Passion for what you do is truly at the core of your success and fulfillment.

Once yo find your passion it can help you in several ways. Here are a few things to think about.

1. Passion will fuel you and give you energy when others around you grow tired.

2. Passion will help you come up with answers when others cease to have creative ideas.

3. Passion will strengthen your will when others drop out.

4. Passion will give you courage to take a risk when others crave security.

5. Passion will allow you to play while others work everyday.

Always take a moment to ask yourself. Do I love what I am doing or am I just doing it just because.
