Is the world changing? Yes. Are there still millions and millions of lost people whom we need to reach? Absolutely. Things are changing ever more rapidly then we have ever seen them. However, the message and love of Jesus will never change. Jesus said, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”
Everyday, people are trying to transform Jesus into something of this Purple Jesus who stands out in a crowd. Why not just let Jesus transform? Do you really think that if we make Jesus purple, people will give up their lives and follow him? Wrong. We need to start letting Jesus transform lives rather than us trying to transform Jesus.
Lets just think of some of the ridiculous ways we try and transform Jesus rather than let Jesus transform.
- Joy Boxes in the back. Who cares where the joy boxes are? In the back, in the front, or on the roof.
- Jazzy clothes. Who gives a rip if your standing up there in a suit, swim trunks, or an elephant suit. If you’re sharing Jesus, lives are being transformed.
- Cool IKEA furniture. It shouldn’t matter if you have cool furniture or everyone sits on the dirt floor. Do you think Jesus cared? People really don’t care, they just need to hear a Jesus message, whether it’s on the dirt floor or on the IKEA furniture.
- Awesome band. I love music, but again if we just share Jesus, people are going to come, get saved, and go out and be the hands and feet.
None of these things bring people to Jesus. Sharing the love of Jesus brings people to Jesus.
One of our greatest problems is not that people aren’t coming to know Jesus. It’s that we are trying to change Jesus. We really screwed up when we started down this road. How true is this though? When something is taking time or not happening in “our” time we tend to change it. Why? I would say a lack of faith and trust in God. As Jesus always said, “Oh you of little faith”.
We need to make this simple and go back to teaching and sharing Jesus.
I can tell you the old ways of teaching, or some other creative way of teaching in order to get people excited about Jesus, are not working. In fact they have never worked. People could careless about modern, post modern, legalism, agendas, cool, hip, or someones stupid opinions. All people really want and need today is the love of Christ. We need to cut the crap and start teaching Jesus.
Jesus said: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
I believe, we must do things that no one else is doing to reach people no one else is reaching. However, could this just be that we need to love like no one else is loving and share Jesus.
You’re either sharing Jesus or you’re not. You’re either remarkable or invisible. You make the choice. If you want to stand out, be remarkable, and reach people, then you better start sharing Jesus.
Sermons, after you’ve heard one, or two, or ten, are boring. A Jesus message, though…now that never gets boring. Jesus describes something phenomenal, something flat out unbelievable. Every day, people come face to face with a lots of boring stuff and a whole lot of crap-but you can bet they won’t forget Jesus.
Put Jesus into everything you build, and everything you do, to create something truly transforming.
This means you have to toss out everything you know and do something “remarkable”. What is this remarkable thing you need to do? Share the simple beautiful message of Christ. Stop trying to transform Jesus and make him purple, and instead just share the message of Jesus and let Jesus transform.
Discussion Question: Are you one of the trying to transform Jesus and make him purple so that he stands out in a crowd? Or are you just sharing Jesus and letting Jesus transform?
